Weather: overcast. Track: well watered, plenty of shale.

1. Sean traps. Les looks for the outside line out of turn 2 but Sean shuts the door.

2. James & Simon trap.

3. André rounds Paul on the 1st turn, and Simon follows through out of turn 2.

4. Scud traps but Simon cannot make it past an impressive looking Will.

5. André traps again. Simon easily has the legs to stave off Les before disaster stikes.

7. Scud makes it look so easy as he rounds Paul.

8. Paul off gate 4 makes a beautiful sweep around Les on turn 1, and leaves enough room for Simon to follow through out of turn 2. Les puts Simon under tremendous pressure and eventually succeeds as Simon overcooks it on turn 2 on the last lap.

11. Les blasts around Scud out of turn 2, moves to the fence, and try as he might Scud cannot find a way past.

13. Scud powers around the whole field to lead down the back straight and Sean tucks inside him for the maximum.

14. Will flys from the gate with young Simon right on his tail. Simon has no option but to try the inside line and so nearly makes it work on the the last bend of lap 3 that Will defends the inside on turn 1 of the last lap. That was just what Simon was looking for and he grabs a handfull of throttle to squeeze around him out of turn 2 to grab the win in the best race of the night.

15. Will traps again, Sean breezes past but with Will riding high and wide André has to cope with trying an inside pass while Les is right on his heels.

Nice to meet Michael Max, sorry to say his Tigers didn't even manage the conservative score he predicted. Hope he enjoyed the racing anyway. The 'QFM' Tigers managed only one race win all night and Paul Bentley looked nothing like a rider whose average is full 0.50 better than Sean's. Will has made giant strides since he was last a Sheffield Tiger (a long time ago) and displayed a few lightening starts. Backup to their top 3 was non existent.

Sean paid for the lot. Scud dropped one point to ex-Tiger Les, and André dropped one to up-and-coming Will. Simon Stead's only lost points were when he blew a motor while comfortably ahead of Les, while Paul had a very good night including a win over Les from behind. Simon(C) was complaining about poor handling before he dropped it on the last lap while giving it all ahead of Les in heat 8, and did very well to control his bike as it lifted out of turn 4 while chasing Paul Bentley in heat 12. James might not have scored a mint but he looked more confident than Adam has over the last couple of weeks.

Heat 1 - Pickers traps and Sean can only hang onto his rear wheel. Paul chips away at Rene until he slips inside him out of turn 2 on the last lap. Rene is not popular on the terraces!

Heat 2 - Simon rides a smooth and confident line to leave Tony a poor second.

Heat 3 - André left spinning at the start rounds Rene by the 3rd bend. He catches Mark but despite a valliant effort around the boards on the last bend Mark just beats him to the line. Good speedway.

Heat 4 - Per traps, Scud follows Simoon home for a share of the points.

Heat 5 - Mark's bike expires as he drops the clutch.

Heat 6 - Pickers traps. Scud and Rene have a fair old tussle for a couple of laps and then Pickers drops it in turn 1 when well clear. He jumps back on but young Adam is too far ahead and claims a gift point. Tigers now lead by 2.

Heat 7 - Scud and André are early leaders but under pressure from Per until he falls just like Pickers in the last heat. The Tigers repeat the dose in the rerun with my heart in my mouth every time the hit the 1st bend.

Heat 8 - Per (t/s) traps and resists hard pressing Paul until Paul tries a little too hard on the dodgy 1st bend and falls on the last lap.

Heat 9 - Scud makes a dream start and first bend after which he extend his lead. Fastest time of the night so far!

Heat 10 - Pickers gates from André and a battle royale ensues for the lead. Rene passes Simon out of turn 2 but Simon follows closely weighing up the options before risking all on a swoop around the 3rd and 4th bends on the last lap to steal 3rd place.

Heat 11 - Sean wins at the canter but Paul is tailed off at the back.

Heat 12 - André's turn to impress from the gate, but Simon unable to do anything about Tony and Mark.

Heat 13 - The Tigers trap but Pickers passes Scud on the back straight. Just as well as a 5-1 would have meant a golden double!

Heat 14 - Mark lifts at the start as Simon disappears into the lead. Adam is able to hold Mark up on the 2nd turn by which time Simon and Tony are well clear. Tony never gives in but Simon rides a lovely race to preserve the 4 point advantage.

Heat 15 - Sean makes a lovely start but Scud falls in a close first bend encounter. Scud is quickly back up and trails in last as Sean extends his lead for a glorious win and the associated bonus point.

Pickers was only beaten by Sean, oh and the first turn, and was good value for the Potters. Per slumped after his first 2 wins, as did Mark who went slowly backwards as the night wore on. Tony plugged away at reserve but received scant support from Rene and Wayne. Rider replacement for Jon picked up 5+2 and Per was probably worth more than Joachim would have been.

A stirling captains performance from Sean with André offering excellent support and an enterprising 11 point return from Scud were the foundations of the Tigers victory. Paul's score was halved by his heat 8 fall but he rode well for his scant reward. Adam's point was a gift from Pickers and Simon was sorely missed with only 4 points from his rider replacement rides. My man of the match and architect of the victory was Simon Cartwright who was excellent value for his 10 points including a crucial heat 14 win under considerable pressure.

1. Pickers traps, moves to the outside and not even Sean can get around him.

2. Adam traps & Simon goes around him out of turn 2. Tony tries to use his Owlerton knowledge to go around young Adam, but makes too many errors and fails by a tyres width.

3. Tony flies from the gate with André too far behind to capitalise on mistakes.

4. Scud and Supermouse take an easy win.

5. André traps but Paul takes Simon v e r y wide on the first turn. He gets by Rene well enough but is too far behind to benefit from Paul's error on lap3.

6. Sean rounds Brent out of turn 2 while Paul cannot make an inside pass over a high and wide riding Tony.

7. Scud takes easy prey Mark on the first lap but only passes fast starting Rene on lap 3. Adam is gifted a point when Mark falls on the last lap.

8. Simon traps, Tony is impeeded as Rene packs in allowing Paul into 2nd place, but he battles hard and eventually rounds Paul out of the last turn.

10. Paul traps. Sean tries some bloodthirsty dives but has to give second best. After sticking to the white line in his previous rides Paul makes it through the smallest of gaps between Buzz's back wheel(!!!) and the fence on turn 2 on the last lap.

13, Scud goes under Paul on turn 3 to join in a glorious 5-1.

14. Simon(S) traps but Buzz squeezes around Simon(C) and then comes hard across him into turn 1 on lap 3.

15. André traps but Scud is taken out on turn 1. Battle as he might he couldn't find a way past Brent.

It is hard to see how such a shambolic team could have won away recently as they were easy meat for the Tigers.

Paul Pickering probably rode Owlerton better tonight than I have ever seen him before, but except for one brilliant flash from ex-Tiger Tony he had little or no backup.

Scud was happier with his bikes having changed back to his regular tuner after a string of problems with Billy Hamill's 'Bullet' tuning firm. Another double figure score from Simon at reserve was the highlight of the evening and he was awarded the 'Man of the Match' prize from sponsors 'Bookers Cash and Carry'.

A crucial away match at Stoke on Saturday with the Tigers using rider replacement for U21 finalist Simon Stead, followed by the Premier fours at Peterborough.

Highlights;

Not a brilliant night for passing, but some good close racing nevertheless. Heat 5 saw Simon make heavy work of passing Andrew eventually on the last bend of lap 3.

In the next race Paul Lee eventually went around Bobby Eldridge on turn2 of the last lap having failed to make an inside pass stick.

In heat 8 (T/s)Craig passed Simon out of turn 2, but Frank couldn't follow through, and Paul was too far behind to capitalize on Frank's big mistake on the last lap.

Heat 9 saw Simon go under Frank ito turn 3 just before Frank retired which could have been mechanical.

Heat 10 saw Sean power past Michael exiting turn 2 with Paul hot in pursuit.

Heat 11 saw young Adam outgate Craig Watson. Craig was past him by the last bend of lap 1, but then didn't have the time to wear down Scott. Andrew battled gamely and found his way around Adam on the last bend to steal the point.

Sean powered to the front in heat 13 while behind him a determined Frank Smart went around Scud. While Scud tried valiantly to get back into contention on the inside Craig Watson followed past around the outside. Trying everything he could on the last bend Scud lost the front wheel and took another tumble.

Simon(C) trapped to win heat 14 by a mile, while behind him Simon(S) and Scott Pegler passed and repassed until Simon made it stick on the last lap.

André fell scrapping with Frank in heat 15, but Sean dominated the 3 man rerun.

Far from the best racing of the season, but entertaining all the same. Guest Michael Coles was the pick of the visitors with Frank Smart surprisingly not managing a single heat win. Sean posted another untroubled maximum and received excellent support from Simon Cartwright who looks better every week. André was flying until he let Michael Coles outgate him in heat 12 and just couldn't find a way past. The rest of the team were struggling to live with the Newport heat leaders but found the Wasps didn't have any sting in their tail. Seriously speaking the Tigers can only expect to lose at Queensway Meadows, the question is will this be enough for the bonus point?

Monday 26th July,

A large crowd witnessed Sheffield's 2nd(?)league defeat of the season at the hands of the Falcons. Although the Falcons got off to a slow start they levelled the score in heat 6 and from then on there was no looking back. The track rode well after last week's disaster although slightly bumpy in places. Racing was processional with hardly any passing.

Exeter Falcons 50 Sheffield Tigers 40

Gary Lobb E E T 1 1 Simon Cartwright 3 1 0 3 7
Referee: Graham Reeve

Heat 1 68.3 Wilson, Gordon, Swain, Lee Fx 3-3 3-3
Lee hit the boards on 1/2 bends when in 4th, however the ref was unnecessarily quick with the red light and excluded Lee, who got up immediately and would have cleared the track in time.

Heat 2 69.0 Cartwright, Barratt, Allott, Lobb Ef 2-4 5-7
Lobb had his first engine failure of the night at the start and just made it to the 1st bend.

Heat 3 68.4 Coles, Stead, Harris, Compton R 4-2 9-9
Harris gated in 2nd but was caught by Stead on backstraight of first lap when Harris' left foot unsteadied him. Compton later hit the boards (without falling) and retired.

Heat 4 69.9 Smith, Simmonds, Cartwright, Lobb Ef 2-4 11-13
Simmo gated cautiously, but rode a good race. Lobb's 2nd engine failure, never attempted to start. Is Elkins disease contageous??

Heat 5 67.7 Coles, Wilson, Lee, Harris 3-3 14-16
Harris came out for this race on Simmo's bike, as alterations to his best bike couldn't be finished in time for this heat.

Heat 6 67.1 Swain, Smith, Gordon, Allott 4-2 18-18

Heat 7 68.7 Simmonds, Barratt, Compton, Stead 5-1 23-19
Simmo flew out of gate and followed by a well riding Barratt scored the night's first 5-1. A nice confidence boost for Simmo.

Heat 8 67.4 Gordon, Barratt R/R, Lee, Cartwright, Lobb Tx 5-1 28-20
Probably just as well Lobb touched the tapes as the Falcons went on to score a 2nd 5-1 with Barratt as R/R.

Heat 9 66.1 Wilson T/S, Coles, Smith, Harris 2-4 30-24
This heat was re-run after Smith snaked out of gate falling on first bend bringing down Harris. Smith's bike looked a bit worse for wear, but both riders OK. All four riders were called back for re-run.

Heat 10 67.2 Swain, Gordon, Compton, Stead 5-1 35-25
Stead did a very slow last lap, not sure why.

Heat 11 68.0 Wilson, Simmonds, Barratt, Lee 3-3 38-28

Heat 12 68.0 Coles, Compton, Lobb, Allott 4-2 42-30
Lobb gated well and challenged Compton for 2nd on first two bends, however seeing Compton edging ahead on backstraight, Lobb gave up and trundled home in third. I wish he would put a bit more heart into his racing. We have just about had enough of him.

Heat 13 67.2 Wilson, Swain, Smith, Simmonds 2-4 44-34
Simmo seemed to give in when outgated and never got very close to Smith

Heat 14 69.7 Cartwright, Barratt, Harris, Stead 3-3 47-37

Heat 15 67.1 Wilson, Swain, Coles, Smith Ef 3-3 50-40
Smith suffered engine failure on last lap when in 4th.

Barratt had a very good night and thoroughly deserved his paid 12, however man of the match goes to Sean Wilson, who was untouchable except for a slight blip in heat 5.
