Peter Collins became the first Englishman to win the World Title for 14 years, and the first ever to win the title abroad. In a powerful display he dropped just one point in the last race, safe in the knowledge that even 3rd place would force a run-off for the title with fellow countryman Malcolm Simmons. Sole Australian Phil Crump claimed the final rostrum place ahead of Kiwi Ivan Mauger and home favourite Zenon Plech. Ivan was left rueing engine problems in his second ride, while Zenon failed to emulate the success of Jerzy Szczakiel who had stolen the crown on this same track three years previously.

The Scandinavian countries were poorly represented by just Anders Michanek at reserve, The Gordeev brothers claimed a solitary point between them for Russia and Scott Autrey became the first American to reach the world final for 25 years. Track record holder Ed Jancarz mustered a meagre 5 points but the five English finalists did us proud filling the first two places on the rostrum and only Chris Morton failing to claim a heat win.

Only two races were completed outside the previous track record, which was left standing to the new World Champion in a time 1.8 seconds faster than the previous best.
