John Barlow reminded us all that since the Tigers Knock-Out cup win in 1974 they had been eliminated in the opening match every year since. In one leg matches from 1975 we had lost out to Exeter, King's Lynn, Hackney and then Exeter again. In 1979 the formula changed to 2-leg 18 heat matches with eight man teams but Sheffield were crushed 129-85 by near neighbours Hull.

The Wolves No.1 Hans Nielsen was currently near the top of the British League averages and Dave Morton was in fine form. Jim McMillan was hoping to be back from injury and the team also included kiwi Bruce Cribb and British born Ivan Blacka who gained most of his experience in the States before joining National league Edinburgh two years ago.

In a closely contested match no team ever led by more than four points and the penultimate 5-1 from Doug and Klaus proved to be the winning margin...
