Programme cover Simmons, Clarke & Hunter Having just clung to their unbeaten home record against Poole one week previously they surrendered it to a very strong West Ham side who shrugged off the loss of star rider Sverre Harrfeldt after just one ride. He and Bengt Larsson clashed in heat 6 and while Bengt was excluded from the rerun he did recover to take his remaining rides. The Hammers had to use reserve Stan Stevens but he rode very well to claim 6 points from his three extra rides. George Major and Brian Leonard had a first bend collision in heat 9 with George unable to make the restart, and John Hart earned himself an exclusion from heat 11 for bringing down his own team mate!

The problem of who to drop from the Tigers side following the return from injury of Bob Paulson was solved when Alan Jay (currently top of the Tigers averages over the last six matches) picked up a knock in the heavy 24-54 defeat at Custom House two days previously.

Malcolm Simmons won the second-half final from Ken McKinlay, and Denis Wasden won the Novices' race from Dave Baugh and Colin Robertson with Barry Bostock a non-starter. The Supporters' Club were holding a 'Beat Dance' in the Sportsman's Tavern next Tuesday featuring 'Glen Dale (previously leader of the Fortunes) and The Kandies', tickets 4/6d (22½p). Next weeks visitors were the Swindon 'Robins' including World Champion Barry Briggs, Mike Broadbanks, Martin Ashby, Bob Kilby and Mike Keen.
