Back in 1964 the World Championship trail for British and Commonwealth riders started with 20 preliminary rounds with the top 32 of the one hundred riders progressing to the British semi-finals (at Cradley and Halifax). The British final was at Wimbledon, followed by the Nordic British final here at Owlerton, and the European final at Wembley. The top 10 would meet the top six Swedes at Gothenburg.

Barry Briggs and Billy Bales tied on 13 points, and wheras today the winners cheque for £20 would have gone to Billy for having most heat wins, on this occasion they had a run-off with Billy winning in a time of 72.8.
