The Robins had been stunned by Ed Stangeland's sudden decision to return home. His intention was to concentrate on winning the Norwegian championship with the aim of securing lucrative continental bookings which he hoped would ensue. The Robins had been scouring Norway, Demark and Sweden for a replacement. They watched Kaparna's tour of National League tracks with Kenneth Selmonsson in mind, but after he showed poor form they approached Jan Andersson instead and he won his debut outing ahead of Carl Glover in heat 3.

The Tigers were without Craig Pendlebury and Rod Haynes who had both picked up knocks in separate incidents in the away win at Poole three days previously. Replacements Taffy Owen and Les Glover picked up paid six points between them, but in reality only once beat a struggling Norman Hunter. Doug Wyer top scored beaten only by Martin Ashby and Reg picked up a paid maximum. Soren Karlsson coped well in the No.2 race jacket and went on to win the 'Tigers Knockout' second-half final ahead of Doug, Martin and Mike Keen.
