Sheffield did well at last weeks Championship Fours at Peterborough finishing second, but were beaten by Somerset so this
fixture had some extra needle. The Rebels were missing Nico Covatti, but the Tigers were without Zaine Kennedy with cracked ribs
and bruised lung, Kyle Howarth who was awaiting lab results of a drug test and also Broc Nicol who was rammed by Josh Bates at
Leicester last night and suffered a broken collar bone. Scunthorpe to the rescue providing all three guests; Stefan for the
Rebels and both Jake and Simon for the Tigers.
Danny sped to an easy win in heat 1 but Drew Kemp didn't even manage a single lap before pulling off. Rory Schlein had some problem and pottered around nearly a lap behind for the odd point. The Tigers reserves are set for a maximum heat win in heat 2 until Josh makes a mess of the second bend on the second lap. He recovered in 3rd place and struggled home just ahead of Henry Atkin. Ty and Simon trap and are never troubled for a 5-1 in heat 3. Jake Allen and Josh trap ahead in heat 4 and even Chris Harris has no answer. Then we hear that the Somerset riders are refusing to continue because there is too much shale on the track. I guess this was just a tactic while the visitors all changed their set-ups because times so far had been fast. A decent referee would have just told them to get on with it, but after a brief inspection he asks for some shale to be graded off. A couple of laps with a simple grader and racing recommenced. Rory Schlein touches the tapes and is out of heat 5. Todd blasts into an unassailable lead at the second time of asking and wins in the fastest time of the meeting. Tigers ten points ahead.
Danny wins heat 6 from Bomber in a sub-minute (track must be terrible) race and Drew manages four consecutive laps. Valentin sheds a chain while 3rd in heat 7 leaving the result as a Scunthorpe 6-0. Todd makes a blistering start to win heat 8. Drew gets into a wobble on the very last turn and Josh ends up in the fence as he takes evasive action gifting a point to Henry. Bomber makes light of the "tricky" conditions to record the fastest time of the year in heat 9. Danny continues his run winning heat 10 and Drew goes around Stefan on the fourth turn to extend the Tigers lead to sixteen.
Simon makes a superb gate to lead heat 11. Jake goes high and wide to pass Rory off turn 4 on the second lap after which Rory loses interest. Todd however loves Owlerton and blasts high and wide off the last turn and pips Jake on the run to the flag. Valentin (gate 3) and Josh (gate 4) clash entering the first turn in heat 12. Steady rightly offers the ref (Graham Hunter, never heard of him) a pair of glasses as Josh is excluded. Bomber twitches on gate 1 just before the tapes rise in the restart but Ty never puts a wheel wrong. Bomber is warned after the race. Danny makes a mess off gate 1 in heat 13 and Rory takes the opportunity to claim his first win. Josh leads heat 14 but Stefan passes him at the start of lap 2, just as Simon passes Henry. Simon then ends an action packed night by suffering engine failure on the last bend gifting Henry yet another point. Bomber traps off gate 3 to win heat 15 comfortably but Todd is stuck at the back with Jake hogging the outside line.
It turned out to be the Tigers easiest win of the season. Track conditions appear to have spooked the visitors, yet the Scunthorpe guests had no problems so long let it be. Drew continues to disappoint and both he and Josh show their lack of experience. Lets hope Zaine and Broc are able to make speedy recoveries and that Kyle's pushers were only helping his bike to start!
