Maury Littlechild introduced the "Pride of the East" for the Norwich City Supporters Trophy explaining that as many ex Norwich riders had been invited as possible to bring back memories to their old fans. There were a number of cancellations, most noticeably Ole Olsen who had a continental engagement and whose place was taken by Wayne Briggs, currently top of the Exeter averages. World finalist Rick France had business commitments and Anders Michanek was programmed to replace him, while injured Terje Henriksson's place went to young Allan Belham for the experience.

I imagine Long Eaton's match at Wolverhampton was a last minute rearrangement because Anders was actually riding for the Archers at Monmore Green. Ivor Brown was promoted from reserve but took a knock in his first ride and withdrew from the meeting. Wimbledon duo Pete Murray and Aussie Alan Stapleton helped out at reserve, while Sheffield's Bengt Larsson once again showed how much he'd learned at the Olle Nygren training school the previous winter.

This is Martin Rogers editorial from Speedway Star Vol.16 No.27

Bengt Larsson of Sheffield again showed his partiality for the King's Lynn track when he won the Pride of the East trophy with 14 points. Larsson also scored a 15-point maximum in a British League match early in the season. Unluckiest rider of the night was home favourite David Crane who crashed when attempting to dive under Larsson in heat 15. The referee had no option but to exclude Crane from the re-run. His other four outings all yielded victory. Another prominent contender was Wayne Briggs, making his first visit to the track. He again showed that he has made a splendid recovery from injury and was well worth his second place in the honours list. Track record holder Trevor Hedge was somewhat disappointing and won only one of his rides.
