Poole came to the Owlerton circuit hoping for a repeat win over Sheffield. Last season the Southerners ended Sheffield's long unbeaten home run, but the Tigers gained revenge. Poole started promisingly but gradually faded away and the home riders took command and won comfortably.
The visitors were without Bo Wirebrand and Derek Cook. Norman Hunter guested, John Davies came in and Pete Smith returned to the saddle following injury. Poole took the lead in the third heat but the Tigers levelled matters by heat 5. After this the Tigers forged ahead and by the halfway stage were six points ahead. Poole attempted tactical changes but to no effect and the Tigers won three of the last six heats by the 5-1 margin.
Throughout the struggle Poole managed only three heat winners. Sheffield's captain Jim Airey, suffering from flu, dragged himself from three days in the sick bed to gain Sheffield's first maximum of the season. He was ably supported by Bengt Larsson.

Admission prices were; Main stand 40p, children & oap's 25p. Back straight 35p & 20p. Reserved seats 15p and programmes 5p.
