Qualification for the Northern Riders Championship in 1981 was simply down to the top four averaging riders from each of the four Northern British League teams. Sheffield hopes rested on Shawn Moran's shoulders but he was put out of contention in the very first heat when beaten by both Belle Vue's Mike Lohmann and Hull's Ivan Mauger. Ivan's own chances disappeared with an uncharacteristic engine failure second time out and in his third ride he virtually stopped exiting the the fourth bend on the last lap to allow team mate Billy Sanders through for the win.
Luck of the draw(!) saw the meeting culminate in a mouth watering heat 20 which featured Shooey along side three unbeaten riders; track record holder Chris Morton of Belle Vue, Australian Billy Sanders of Hull and the precocious Kenny Carter of Halifax. Ivan may have helped his team-mate in the earlier heats but it was Kenny Carter who borrowed his machine for the title deciding race which he duly won with ease ahead of Billy and Chris. This was Kenny's solitary success in this competition.
