The Saints went down to a determined Sheffield junior side. Without Brian Murray who was riding for Glasgow at Poole, and in a change to the programme when Colin Tucker  was recalled by Crewe, the Saints tracked two guests.

Frank Varey resisted the temptation to use experienced Sheffield reserve Dave Baugh, but the Cubs benefitted from Bob Valentine and Reg Wilson's track experiece from their previous visit with the Workington 'Comets'.

The following is Jock Anderson's report from the Speedway Star Vol.19 No.17;

  "Something of a shock here for the Saints! Besides suffering their third home defeat, they saw Bob Valentine, who previously scored 11 points on this circuit for Workington 'Comets', smash Alan Wilkinson's track record with 79.4 in the first heat. He then wrote his name in block capitals over the meeting, chalking up a maximum from four rides.

Saints were leading by four points after heat 9 but the Cubs turned it on in the remaining heats with two 4-2s and a 5-1 (from Doug Wyre (sic) and Reg Wilson).

With Colin Tucker called up by Crewe, Saint's who'd already borrowed Maurie Robinson from neighbouring Berwick, brought in Hec Haslinger from Doncaster. It was a night though when both Robinson and Alistair Brady, both of whom had blown up engines two nights before, never got into their stride.
