The Bears were without Eric Boothroyd who had scored a maximum on their last visit in the Northern League. Eric was injured recently and had decided it was time to retire and concentrate on his business commitments. Frank Varey's programme notes congratulated Clive Featherby on knocking four fifths of a second off his own track record and suggested it would take some beating. Even Peter Craven couldn't catch him but he was wished well for the World Final at Wembley at the weekend. Norwich, another National League team, along with Ove Fundin had been approached for a challenge match but sadly were unable to accept the invite. Three Tigers, Jack Kitchen, Clive Featherby and Ron Bagley were all riding in the Provincial League Riders Final at Belle Vue. A limited number of seats were available at 5/- (25p) or you could take your chances at the turnstiles.
