Team positions were determined by the last six official matches. When Billy Bales failed to score in the away fixture against Cradley Heath he dropped to reserve while top scorer Bob Paulson over hauled Brian Maxted to become third heat leader.

The Lions were expected to put up a fight tracking two star riders in Ray Wilson and Anders Michanek along with two ex-Tigers in George Major and John Hart. Charlie Monk returned to the saddle after illness but Bengt Larsson top scored beaten only by Michanek. Billy Bales beat Anders on his way to a three ride maximum and Brian Maxted returned another solid score to send the Lions away pointless.

~ Vic White wrote in the Speedway Star Vol.17 No.10 ~

Despite brilliant riding by Anders Michanek Sheffield had little difficulty in defeating Leicester in their first meeting in the British League. But Leicester, newcomers to the league, showed some great promise, particularly with the riding of Michanek and their captain Ray Wilson. Michanek was beaten only once and that was by veteran Billy Bales who is trying to fight his way back to form.

Bales, who was reserve for the meeting, had three races - and gained a maximum of 9 points. Charlie Monk, who has had some misfortune since he joined Sheffield was back after illness. But he was not back to his best riding form winning only one of the three [sic] heats and being pushed into third place in two of them. Brian Maxted, the young Sheffield rider, continues to improve and managed to win a couple of his four heats.
