John Dews was recovering from head injuries sustained in a crash at Newport the week before so the Tigers were operating rider replacement. Frank Varey had been searching for a rider to strengthen the team and had been allowed to sign Bengt Larsson but no one expected him to score a 15 point maximum on his British debut. Bengt made it a clean sweep winning his second-half heat ahead of Alan Jay and the final ahead of Billy Bales and Bob Paulson. It transpired he had been a regular attender at the Olly Nygren training school over the previous winter.

Maury Littlechild had just seen both Stan Stevens and Peter Moore return after injury and was hoping they would soon recover match fitness but lost Peter after just one ride. Gary Middleton had agreed to join the 'Stars' but his ship wasn't due into dock until 3rd May.
