Hull v Sheffield programme from 1976

Barry Briggs and Mike Curoso made their debut's as Vikings in this rain affected Northern Trophy match. The Tigers operated rider replacement for Arnold Haley who had sustained a broken arm and nose at Owlerton six days earlier in a terrible looking crash which could have resulted in far worse injuries. Briggo had been tempted out of retirement by a deal which saw his equipment being maintained and transported to meetings for him, so he could just turn up and ride.

The Vikings lost Mitch Graham after a last lap crash in heat 4 which saw Craig Pendlebury excluded by ACU Referee Alan Mullee. Frank Auffret's win saw the Vikings taking the lead but Doug Wyer lowered Briggo's colours in heat 6 and Nicky Allott's point ahead of American Mike Curoso leveled the aggregate scores. Graham Drury was excluded from heat 7 for breaking the tapes and could not be replaced as their other reserve was already in the heat. Doug won from Frank and Carl Glover's point gave the Tigers a two point lead. Frank Auffret and Bobby Beaton won the next two heats but the Tigers filled the minor placings to maintain a slender advantage. Doug suffered mechanical problems in heat 10 which was won by Briggo and the scores were once again level.

Reg Wilson won heat 11 from Frank but Craig's third place ahead of Graham Drury gave the lead back to the Tigers. Doug Wyer beat Briggo in heat 12 in the fastest time of the night and Carl finished ahead of Pole Kaz Adamczek to put the Tigers four points ahead into the last race. Bobby completed his maximum but Reg did a captain's job by taking Frank very wide on the first turn allowing Carl into a comfortable second place which assured us the away win.

Phil Michaelides and Taffy Owen both beat Graham Drury in the reserves race, and the Rider-of-the-night final was won by maximum man Bobby Beaton from Doug and Frank.
