Sheffield fans were unhappy when referee Vic Harris determined that Bob Valentine's fall half way down the
back straight was due to 'first bend bunching' and allowed all 4 back for the restart. Bob was
by now receiving medical attention but escaped relatively unscathed with just cuts and bruises. Ex-Viking
Reg Wilson proved our saviour and grabbed first place which secured us the away win, although at the time
he had little inkling that it would be just the first of an unbeaten clean sweep of
victories on our way to winning the Knock Out Cup. With 9 of the 13 heat winners it is difficult to
understand how we only managed to run out winners by just the odd 2 points.
Editorial in the programme made reference to the ban on commuting foreigners, and a denial
that they were chasing young Swedish prospect Tommy Jansson. Kings Lynn were due in town next week with
Malcolm Simmons, Terry Betts and Ian 'Tiddler' Turner in tow.
Derek Tattersall reminded us that Jimmy Mac
had been riding in Germany the previous weekend attempting to get Scotland through to the
World Best Pairs final, due to be held at Hyde Road in July, sponsored by Trust House Forte & the
Sunday Mirror. Reserved seats were 80p, £1.40 and £1.70!
