For much of this exciting "Speedway Star" sponsored KO Cup match Sheffield were trailing behind Halifax - at one stage by as much as 8 points. Then some brilliant team riding by Tigers' skipper Jim Airey and Arnold Haley - they each took 13 points from 5 rides - brought them from behind to get a thrilling victory.
Halifax without injured Dave Younghusband dominated the early heats, with captain Eric Boocock in great form. Sheffield were slow away from the tapes and even the lesser experienced Halifax riders were taking easy points from them, but timely changes giving both Haley and Airey an extra ride each managed to change Sheffield's fortunes. It was a meeting of fast times and Sheffield had to put on the pressure.
It was a double celebration night for Haley. Defending his Golden Helmet match race title he beat Boocock in an exciting race in the fastest time of the night.
