Silver Sash Match Race | |
---|---|
Eric Boocock (Holder) | 2nd |
Jim Airey (Tigers top-scorer) | 1ST |
65.6 |
Both teams were missing riders with the Dukes employing rider replacement for Alan Jay, and the Tigers calling up their no.8, Doncaster Stallions captain Guy Hawkes, in place of Billy Bales. The Dukes' heat leaders dominated proceedings in the first 10 heats of this match with reserve John Dews the Tigers only heat winner up to that point. Jim Airey had taken a tactical substitute ride in heat 9 but trailed in last although he made amends by winning heat 11 from Greg Kentwell. He took another point from fellow Aussie Greg in heat 13 but had to follow Dukes' skipper Eric Boocock home.
Not many people beat Booey around the Shay back in those days, and after such a demoralizing (for the Sheffield fans) display it came as a big surprise when Jim made a cracking start and totally dominated the Silver Sash match race, equalling the track record in the process. We might have lost the match but Jim's win kept me smiling all the way home.
