Sheffield
came close to ending Halifax's undefeated home record in league and cup matches
this season. They took an early lead when Jim Airey beat Dave Younghusband and
Bob Paulson came in third in the opening heat, and clung on right up to the final
race.
Unbeaten Airey was in this race and the odds were on a Sheffield win,
but the Australian star was excluded for tape breaking and was clearly unhappy
about it. Greg Kentwell and Eric Boocock raced to an untroubled 5-1 over reserve
Reg Wilson and Bob Valentine who fell on the second lap and remounted.
Quite
a rehearsal for the Speedway Star Cup Quarter-final clash at the Shay on August
14.
