This was the third time that Leicester had staged a meeting between the English Lions Touring squad and an England team
built around the World Team Cup squad. Peter Collins had top-scored for the Lions in both previous meetings with the Lions triumphant in 1976, but the World Cup squad led by Malcolm Simmons winning
in '78. This year saw Peter switching sides but his team failed to beat the Lions who had whitewashed the Australians in the winter to the tune of 7-0. John Berry made good use of the England
reserves in the second half of the meeting but despite only providing 8 heat winners the Lions showed how well they rode together as a team.
