Doncaster's new-look team kicked off the 1970 season with an impressive 51-27 victory in their challenge match against Sheffield Cubs on the York Road track.

Joe Thurley summed up the proceedings neatly when he said "I was proud of the way the Doncaster side rode and quite satisfied with the attendance, but I wish Sheffield had had a stronger team out and made the issue a much closer one."

Veteran skipper-coach Gordon McGregor celebrated his first outing wearing the "Fiery Dragon" with ten points, but the man who stole the show was Chris Harrison with a maximum at the first attempt.

Sheffield, who had an early setback when former Doncaster rider Doug Wyer stated he was unable to ride as he hadn't a machine, only managed one heat winner and that was another former "Stallion", Stuart Ulph, when he won the tenth heat in the best time of the meeting.
