Sheffield v Cradley The Tigers were expecting a close match as they only beat the Heathens by two points in the season opening "Iron and Steel Trophy" and the away league fixture had seen the Heathens romp to a 34 point victory. Jack Winstanley had looped at the gate and bent the forks on a brand new frame one week previously but it seems Guy Allott had come to the rescue. Ronnie Rolfe was still struggling following his recent crash at Neath and the Tigers had also lost Tony Robinson with a badly strained and swollen knee and wrist injury. Alan Jay was promoted from reserve with Ken Hanscombe deputizing for him.

Ron Bagley rode to an untroubled maximum, and Clive Featherby was only beaten by Ivor Brown in his last ride. Clive got his revenge in the second half scratch final winning ahead of Ivor Brown and John Hart, with Ron Bagley falling but quickly remounting. The second half also saw the first "Jimmy Crawford Trophy" race for our most promising novices. It was won by Alan Jay from Phil Hattersley, Ken Hanscombe and Gerald Goodwin. Alan also won the reserves final from Derrol Melbin.
