Erik Gundersen was still smarting having lost his World Title to Hans Nielsen the previous weekend and he led the Heathens into an early lead. Martin Hagon ground to a halt on the last bend while leading heat 1 and David Walsh fell while leading heat 2. Les Collins trapped his foot under his footrest in heat 3 and was still suffering in heat 5 when he was passed by both Cradley riders. Steve Bastable passed David Walsh to win heat 8 and with Nigel Leaver beating Martin Hagon the Heathens now held a six point lead.

Neil Collins replaced Hagon as a tactical substitute in heat 10 and produced a tremendous ride to follow his skipper home for a 5-1 to narrow the margin to just two points, and then he beat Jan O in the next race with David Walsh battling past Steve Bastable to level the scores. Erik Gundersen completed his maximum in heat 12 and although Peter Carr resisted every move that Simon Cross made Shawn was left trailing in fourth place as the Heathens took the lead once again.

Jan O's bike failed him in the last heat decider leaving the Collins brothers fighting it out amongst themselves. Les made light of his injured foot to take the win and it looked as though the Tigers were going to steal both league points until Neil picked up a puncture on the second lap. Even so he hung on grimly but Phil was able to pick him off when the tyre cover started to disintegrate on the last lap!
