The Tigers promoted Keith Evans from reserve to take Arnold Haley's place and drafted in Billy Burton at reserve for this Bank Holiday Monday meeting. New signing Bo Wirebrand, previously of Newport and Poole, started with a win but then tailed off and our top two received scant support from the rest of the team. John Dews attempts to sign Bernie Persson had been stalled by the Speedway Riders Association due to the Swede's poor attendance record the previous year.

Skipper Ole Olsen top-scored for the Bees for whom only Jiri Stancl disappointed. Mitch Shirra was trialing a new 4-valve Jawa and had recently returned from the USA where he had been riding for a 'Rest of the World' team along with Doug Wyer. Programmes notes drew attention to the corresponding fixture last season which saw the Tigers slump to their biggest defeat 54-24. The Bees were due to visit Belle Vue the coming Saturday where they hadn't won since the National League match in 1964. In that fixture Soren Sjosten had top-scored for the Aces, and Nigel Boocock for the Bees which was a coincidence as they were now team mates at Bristol.

Alf Busk and Alan Molyneux both went on to become Tigers, Alan for one year in 1981 and Alf in 1985 following a short spell at Swindon. Another Owlerton connection is Jiri Stancl whose 2 year-old son was destined to ride for us in 1994!
