Charles Ochiltree's programme notes commented that Sheffield had just surrendered their 3 year unbeaten at home record to the Newport Wasps. He said, "This season we've hardly managed three weeks!" The Bees had just parted company with teenage Pepe Teromma who had to return home to continue his education. He was hoping he might transfer his 1976 courses from Helsinki to a Technical College in Leicester. As Pepe moved out, Alan Jay was tempted back in with the lure of machines set up for him by Ian and Cliff Hindle. Also absent was Tommy Nilsson on international duty and their choice of guest was Aussie Steve Reinke.

The Tigers had been reeling all season. Having lost Bob Valentine thanks to the rider allocation committee, they were then hit with injuries to two heat leaders, Reg Wilson and Arnold Haley, second string Craig Pendlebury and also reserve Rodney Haynes! George Hunter was our guest for Reg, and John Dews (Oxford) was deputizing for Soren Karlsson who was also riding in Sweden. Nicky Allott was programmed as the Tigers No.7 but it was Ken Matthews in the pits.

The teams were evenly matched in this match and the scores were level with two heats remaining but as the rain set in fast starting became order of the day. The match points were decided when Bob Valentine's bike expired in the last heat and with the rain persisting the second half was cancelled.
