The Dukes were struggling to fill the void left by Kenny Carter's suicide and were still hoping to get permission to sign young Czech Toni Kasper. In the meantime their no.8 Gary Havelock had been posting some impressive results including 8 (paid 9) against the Coventry Bees one week previously. With Larry Ross missing they had also promoted fellow 'Tudor' Anthony Hulme so when Gary also withdrew they were forced to call in Louis Carr as a guest. The Tigers were also without Les Collins and had drafted their no.8 Sean Wilson into the team, and also replaced Peter McNamara with Tiger 'Cub' Derrol Keats.

David Walsh and Neil Collins put the Tigers ahead with a 5-1 in heat 9 and in the closing heats the Tigers heat leaders did just enough to maintain the slender advantage.
