After two years in the doldrums in the wake of the Hillsborough disaster the Tigers re-opened with a Sunday afternoon challenge against the 'old enemy'. Cliff Carr had spent a considerable amount building a team from scratch and gaining admission to the second division, but it was a difficult pill for the Tigers fans to swallow to see the Aces tracking three ex-Tigers as their heat leaders.

Shawn Moran won the first heat but Neil Evitts and Ian Barney took a share of the points. The Aces dominated the reserves race and were set for a maximum heat win until Max Schofield's engine blew. Kelly Moran outpaced Peter Carr to win heat 3 in the fastest time of the night, and the Aces took the lead with Carl Stonehewer beating ex-team mate Richie Musson for third place. Louis Carr was streets ahead in heat 4 when he suffered engine problems allowing Neil Collins to extend the Aces lead. Peter Carr made a flying start to win heat 5 but Richie Musson tried too hard from the back and took a tumble allowing Shawn to nurse his sick engine home for a gift point.

Ian Barney gated ahead in heat 6 but was soon picked off by Neil Collins. Neil Evitts took longer to pass his team mate and never looked like catching the leader. The Tigers skipper was the convincing winner of heat 7 but Kelly and Carl shared the heat. Max Schofield and Derrol Keats had a coming together on the first turn of heat 8 and John Whittaker harshly excluded Derrol. Sean Venables won the restart from Ian Barney and the Aces lead was extended to 6. Cliff Carr responded immediately with a tactical substitution replacing Simon Wolstenholme with Louis Carr. The Carr brothers took a 5-1 ahead of Neil Collins and the Tigers were back in the match. Neil Evitts rounded Nigel Leaver on the second turn to lead heat 10, was briefly passed by Kelly but retook the lead to claim his first win for the Tigers.

Louis Carr gated ahead in heat 11 but the race was stopped when Sean Venables took Derrol Keats off on the second lap. Shawn won the rerun with Derrol bravely hanging on for four laps to claim the point riding with a broken collar-bone! Neil Evitts won heat 12 from Neil Collins but Carl again beat Richie for another shared heat to preserve the Aces narrow lead. Heat 13 was the clash of the brothers, Carr's against Moran's. The visitors gated ahead and put on a brilliant display of team riding to keep the ever pressing Peter Carr behind them. Six points adrift again Cliff Carr responded with a double tactical substitution dropping the point-less Richie Musson and injured Derrol Keats in favour of Neil Evitts and Peter Carr. Carl and Nigel never had a chance as Peter gated and waited for his team mate to join him to put on their own display of team riding. So it all came down to a last heat decider and the two sets of brothers were the nominations. Peter gated ahead of Shawn and Louis passed Kelly on the second bend and that's the way they crossed the finishing line to draw the match.

The Tigers fans turned out in their droves after two years without a team to support and were well entertained with some good track action.
