Sheffield v Ashfield, 1949

Frank Varey's programme notes welcomed Johnnie Hoskins and the Ashfield 'Giants' (the previous season's Newcastle team) along with Odsal's leg-trailing maestro Oliver Hart who was to make an attempt on the track record in the second half. A new top dressing had been applied to the circuit over the winter months and although the first meeting against Bristol a week earlier had been run on a rain soaked surface, Stan Williams had equalled the track record with 72.6 in heat 1, Billy Hole lowered it to 72.4 in heat 2, and Bruce Semmens had shattered it with 71.6 in heat 3.

Stan set a new record in heat 1 which was equalled both by Bruce in heat 3 and Oliver in his official attempt straight after the interval. It fell again, this time to the Odsal star in the last race of the night. (Len Williams went on to record a time of 69.6 on September 1st, three seconds faster than the record for the previous season so I think the new track dressing could be considered to be a success).
