The Monarch's had steeled themselves for a difficult home match against the Tigers who had already won at Meadowbank on the opening night of the season. Five days previously the Monarchs had recorded their best away win of the season, 46-32 at Long Eaton, with Wayne Briggs scoring his first away maximum, and they found the injury hit Tigers easy prey.

Already missing Tommy Roper the Tigers arrived north of the border without Ron Bagley and had to promote reserve Ken Hanscombe into the No.1 jacket and borrow local man Ken Cameron at reserve. If this wasn't bad enough both Clive Featherby and Dent Oliver suffered machine problems and only John Dews and Jack Kitchen managed to finish ahead of a home rider all night.

Doug Templeton broke Ivan Mauger's lap record in heat 1 and went on to score a perfect maximum as the Monarchs strode towards the title. Jack Kitchen was due back in town the following week when he would be representing England against "Scotland" in the second match of an international series. The Scotland team included Doug Templeton (capt), Ross Gilbertson (Australia), Charlie Monk (Australia), Wayne Briggs (New Zealand), George Hunter, Maury Mattingley (England), Willie Templeton and Chris Julian (England).
