Belle Vue's top two, Ivan Mauger and Soren Sjosten were both missing as they were en-route to Wroclaw for the World Final. Ivan would have been
firm favouite as he was in sparkling form having dropped just 2 points in his last 27 rides for an average of 11.72, and had equalled Peter Craven's
12 year-old track record the previous week.
Sheffield's Jim Airey looked likely to ride unbeaten but was surprised by West Ham's Christer Lofqvist in his last ride. Glasgow's Charle Monk
and Jim McMillan joined him on the rostrum with Leicester's Ray Wilson and home rider Chris Pusey both in good form.
