The wisdom of putting one of the home track riders in the English team - even as a reserve - has been proven
time and time again. Once again the selectors have followed this horses for courses policy. Indeed much
the same idea was followed by the Australians themselves in the series last winter.
At Poole for example we have Pete Smith waiting in the wings. Pete, an Englishman of Irish decent has only
lacked consistency in the past. Bearded James Bond will be serving a similar purpose at Wolverhampton. Jimmy
was the shock performer of the 1968 Midland Riders Championship. Up at Sheffield there will be lttle surprise
over the inclusion of Arnold Haley.
The Poole Test Match resulted in a 66-42 win for the Lions. The second test at Wolverhampton was abandoned in
the pouring rain and was rerun in July resulting in a 73-35 win and a 3-0 series whitewash.
